Ok so I have had redbulls before and they were ok... But today had a rockstar and it totally energized me!.... So it made me wonder... And I'm curious on several opinions... How bad would it be to drink one before workouts and would it count if I jog more or workout more using the assistance of an energy drink?... Would pushing past my normal strength and energy be dangerous?

Two questions. Was it a mental boost; meaning all in your head and how many calories is one energy drink?

Depending on why you work out, you could be negating some or all of the calories you were trying to burn.

I'd stay away to be honest. Maybe drink a cup of coffee if you have to.

Energy drinks are overpriced empty calories with caffeine. You'd be much better off getting an $8 bottle of caffeine pills.

I hate em. They make me all tense and grumpy. I will occasionally indulge if I have a big yard project or some wood cutting, but for thre most part the high is not worth the low....and anything that makes me pee flourescent yellow cant be too good for me!!

another problem with energy drinks is that they're carbonated and can make for an upset stomach. if i need a boost before a workout i go for a coffee, tea or the energy boosting sobe lifewater all of which are zero calorie.

I don't think having an energy drink would harm you. Pushing beyond your normal strength is what you want when exercising, that's how you build muscle. The main concern would be the nutritional impact on your diet. I use B complex vitamins, they're just a few bucks a bottle. I take them for an energy boost, and you won't get that buzz like the drink because there isn't any caffiene. I'm not sure about rockstar, but that's what is in red bull, check the ingredients. Maybe combine one of those with a caffiene pill for the same effect?

fyi-if you do decide to try B vitamins your urine may turn bright yellow. the excess B2 is filtered through your kidneys and it looks radio-active. Smile

Personally I would stay far, far away from energy drinks. There's enough sugar in one to kill a small horse. Surprised) (Okay, not really, but there's a LOT of sugar). Most people often crash after these types of drinks. They also often start to need larger and larger quantities to get that same "buzz."

If you are looking to get through a workout, I prefer to take a small amount of Jack3d in the morning (and I mean start with a small amount). It's NO, which is one of the go-to stackers for weight lifting/working out. I have turned several of my body builder friends onto this, and one guy (who does MMA) has turned several of his fighters onto it as well. They all seem to like it as much as I do. None of us have had issues with crashing or needing greater amounts over time, and it really sustains us through intense workouts. (Their fighting practices are extremely intense and can last for several hours.)

Yes, you can push yourself too far past your limits, especially when you are hopped up on supplements (or caffeine). This is the reason I am still somewhat wary of adding creatine. But I think I'm going to pick some up tomorrow and see how it goes.

Definitely consider trying Jack3d, though. You can get it at GNC and a lot of other places.
Comfortable at this size/weight (I really don't want to buy size 0 jeans).

It's not about "weight" or the number on the scale. It's about lean muscle mass and body fat percentage.
At 125 I was a size 8 (after I lost 100+ pounds over 1.5 years).
At 135 I was a size 6 (maintained for several years) and over 28% body fat. I had 97 pounds of lean muscle mass and felt skinny fat.
Now at 140 I am a size 2 and have the smallest measurements I've ever had since I started taking them around the age of 18. I'm at 25% body fat and 107 pounds of lean muscle mass!! I'm no She-Hulk, either.

Don't tell me you aren't losing "weight." That doesn't tell me anything. Tell me how much fat you've lost and how much lean body mass you've gained. Here's a good start to estimate: http://www.scientificpsychic.com/fitness/diet.html

Red Bull makes you hyper because of the sugar. They both have the same amount of caffeine so there is no difference there.

Rockstar is wonderful. It has a ton of B vitamins in it, and as long as you are doing the sugar free versions, it is great while trying to lose weight and it absolutely boosts energy. I LOVE the stuff.

The ones I drink are sugar free... And low Cals so as far as nutritional value it's not a concern.

My container of Jack3d cost $15 (normally $20, but I got it on sale) and lasts 45 days. I wonder how much you guys are paying for these "energy" drinks, even at Costco.

Honestly I wouldn't use them, but I never have so I would not be a good judge of how dangerous they are, I like to go for more natural fixes, like peanut butter or coffee/tea. I would ask your doctor or pharmacist what they think. I used to work at a pharmacy and the owner/Pharmacist was soo against them, I knew they must not be great for you!

I cant say that it's bad for you or something like that but for me, it all depends on your purpose for using it. Say you want to lose extra weight and gain lean muscles, and if you use energy boosters like this, chances are you'll get through your workout but may not lose/use those stored fats in your body [fats - which is your natural source of energy] but used up those empty calories to took in your pre-workout. So, I guess you have to really think about it and try to weigh things up before you decide to take such drinks. I honestly take this whenever I am not in the mood to workout but hey, I'm already ripped [not to brag about it] and is currently on 8% body fat. Cheers gurl! Very Happy

Rockstar has ginsing in it which is supposed to boost energy add in the caffeine and you're flying. Not sure what's in the redbulls though.
I worked in a pharmacy just like newlywed and was at a gift show one year with pharmacists and manager buying giftware and one booth had the 5 hour energy drinks (you know the little bottles) and also one called Mana made by gamer for gamer. Well we got free sample which I got to keep and the pharmacist just said he would never sell them as its mainly just small amount of vitamins and caffeine. I still have the bottle of Mana which used to be a pretty blue since Mana in games is blue and for magic energy. Now its a greyish green so ewwww lol.

Personally, I don't like the taste of any energy drinks. But, I have to friends who have recently lost over 60 pounds each & they swear by them. They both have switched from Red Bull to the sugar free Rockstar drinks....particualrly the grape soda flavored ones. It has worked for them & if you love energy drinks, the sugar free varieties are certainly a much better option. They both agree that drinking one 30 min or so before a workout is what has helped them power through & up their stamina.

Just a little input based on hear-say. Like I said, I don't like the taste (or smell) so I don't drink them & can't speak from personal experience.
