My name is Adrian & I'm 51 & am at 320.5 lbs. Now. I'm 10 lbs. Less than a month ago. I see an endocrinologist & have hyPERthyroidism & take Tapazole to correct it. I take some other drugs, like Celebrex & Zestril, and a few others that cause weight gain. I have a dietary R.N. who, who wants me to eat LOTS OF VEVETABLES, few fruits, NO CARBS to speak of, and good amts. Of protein. Basically a modified Atkins diet. I need to excercise more, but have BAD arthritis in both knees. I wish any/all who read this would give me a hint about that-exercisin with pain involved. I also wish you a lot of strength, luck, and courage in the batte to lose weight. God Bless you.+

Hi Adrian. Your doctor is trying to get the ball rolling for you quickly. As you lose weight, your knees will most likely improve some. I walked my weight off once and now I'm doing it again. Just a half hour a day goes a long way. Now I walk 1/2 and do pilates 1/2. I by the way no longer have any pain. I'm not sure why as it used to be in my knees and shoulders really bad. I too am 51, but that joint pain had been there since I was 27, so I really can't explain why I am pain free exactly, but it didn't happen until I started working my body. Nothing real strenuous, just movement of some kind I think is key. The low carb plan will almost certainly take some weight off. I wish you the best of luck and success.

I started this as well because my knees were giving out. For the first four or five months I didn't exercise at all, just cut down on my calories. As I lost weight my knees improved to the point now I have no problem walking my dogs twice a day for half an hour. I did look into what type of exercise I could do and the most recommended was biking or swimming. I tried a stationary bike and my it made my knees swell and become inflamed. There is no pool nearby and there was no way I was getting into a swim suit so that was out. You can lose weight just by cutting back on the food. Exercise definitely helps but not if it causes more stress on your joints. The hardest thing I found was not to eat out of boredom when I was sitting on my ass all day.

If you have access to a pool this is a perfect exercise for you....even if you can only do it a couple of times a week. The more weight you loose, the easier it will be on your knees and your overall health. I wish you lots of luck my friend, stay focused, keep busy and know that you have support here.

Hi Adrian,One thing to consider might be exercises you can do sitting down. Maybe various sets of arm raises, shoulder shrugs ,slight side bends. I would google something like seated workouts or working out in a chair see what you can find. Good luck!!

Hi Adrian. I am also working on saving my knees and I have a long journey ahead. It will be so worth it. Right now due to a torn acl I am limited to short walks and seated resistance (weight) training. The physical therapist recommends aqua aerobics & swiming. Most knee patients and arthritis sufferers swear by swimming (in a heated therapy pool if one is nearby) and I am hoping to grow a pair, get over myself, and get in a swimsuit because I have seen the results in friends who swim.

Calorie restriction will get you started. I am juicing at least half of the veg I eat a day (and I eat mostly veg right now). You can make wonderful changes and heal your body by eating lots of micronutrients and moving. Enjoy the journey!

Hi Adrian,
When I started on my weight loss journey I was about your size. For the longest time I didn't really exercise AT ALL, other than walking to and from places nearby in my own pace. I didn't have the strength to do anything more than that.
However, a good weight loss plan helped me to lose enough kgs that I was able to start doing more, and it became pretty obvious to what extend I could do it. I am sure it'll be the same for you.
Of course, I'm not saying that you should NOT exercise already - I'm just saying that the dieting is a more important factor to lose weight. The exercise is a great addition, but if you can't do much then just do what you can. Smile
Enjoy your weight loss journey - make sure it's a good, positive experience - that's when it becomes easier to reach your goals.
