HCG starvation diet or even death diet

OK not saying they are totally right or totally wrong I'm just saying they make a point.
OK I have researched a little more and found that HCG does not protect muscle according to this article nothing can protect your muscle and this makes sense. If a really buff guy eats right stays in a 2,000 calorie diet to maintain his weight but does not exercise he will loose his muscle because he is not using it. Even though you are only eating 500 calories a day HCG's purpose is to get the rest from your abnormal fat. SO AS FOR NEPERSONNE, the reason why he probably got good results was because he used his muscles during this diet so therefore he did not loose it. Does that still mean he starved himself? He was getting the rest of his calories from his stored fat and didn't loose any muscle.
I'm on nobody's side I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this. Please kindly tell me what you think.

@boraboraliz thanks for the feedback... how did you get the hcg did you go to the a special doctor or would any doctor be able to help me with that?

iJuice, using your muscle is only part of it- you have to provide your body with enough sustenance to maintain it. Your body burns muscle when it's starving (like on 500 cals a day) because muscle requires more calories to sustain it than fat. When it comes to survival, muscle is expendible.

There has been an observed limit on how much body fat can be lost in a day, namely,
31 calories per pound of body fat per day
Even if you get sufficient dietary protein (very difficult on a 500 cal/day diet) AND you engage in resistance training, if your daily deficit is larger than the maximum rate of fat transfer, you're almost certainly going to lose muscle (never mind the part where the claims about HCG being muscle sparing are without any evidence).
Let's use an example. Let's say you weigh 160 pounds, and you have 25% body fat. This is 40 pounds of fat. At 31 calories per day, per pound of fat, the most you can lose is roughly 1240 calories worth of fat every day...about one third of a pound.
At 160 lbs, 25% body fat, your resting metabolic rate is around 1550 calories per day. Even with a sedentary day where you have essentially no activity, you'd probably burn about 1860 calories.
Now if you are eating 500 calories, your deficit is 1360.
This means that even under ideal conditions - eating enough protein for a zero nitrogen balance, and engaging in resistance training, you still can't ensure no muscle loss with a deficit of 1360 calories. But on 500 calories, you're probably not getting enough protein, and we've already assumed no exercise (otherwise the deficit would be even higher).
So you're looking at an absolute
of 120 calories in energy that can't be met with body fat. And catabolizing muscle mass yields about 600 calories per pound (unlike 3500 per pound of fat), so you can pretty much assume that you're losing
a pound of muscle every 5 days, and probably more. If you do ANY sort of activity at all, including light walking, you're increasing the calorie deficit, and increasing the lean mass loss (which isn't just muscle, it also comes from SKIN, collagen, and your
So, you can waste money on an hcg placebo and lose "weight" faster, but you'll end up being poorer and looking (and feeling) worse than someone who ate more sensibly and took just a little bit more time. (This is just an example though. The numbers and results can change dramatically depending on whether you have more or less body fat, and are more or less active. And the composition of your diet matters too).
Seems like a no-brainer to me. Why race to the goal for what are likely worse results, in terms of both health AND appearance?

I did a round of the HCG diet and lost 25 lbs in 32 days. I then went on the maintenance phase, and planned to go another round after 6-8 weeks of maintenance. (I need to lose a total of about 75 lbs) However...I had a very disturbing experience upon starting maintenance.
I followed the maintenance diet instructions...yet became very ill. The second full day of maintenance, my bowels REALLY freaked out on me. For days I had terrible gastric problems, which led to the most intense headaches I've ever experienced. I seriously thought I was going to die with an aneurysm. I had to get migraine medicine from my doctor...and I have never had migraines before. This lasted a little over a week (which gave me an additional 3 lbs of weight loss...which was NOT worth it).
I have heard that IF someone is going to have gall bladder issues, that will happen very soon upon entering the maintenance phase. Although I didn't wind up with gall bladder problems, I was certain at the time that my body was having a very bad reaction to eating more "normally" after living on such a low calorie intake for a month.
Now (8 weeks later)...I have kept most of the original weight off. The 5 lbs I have gained have been my own fault for eating too large portions and not the best food choices. I have been eating responsibly about 75% of the time, so it's obviously that 25% that's the problem.
I swore I would not do HCG again...but lately I have been thinking about it. I have decided that when I went on maintenance I added fats too quickly (and possibly ate hard boiled eggs that had been in the frige too long). One very positive thing that HCG did for me, besides the initial weight loss, was that for the first time in my adult life, I am "regular". I mean, like clock work. And that tells me that the diet DID do something good for my metabolism.
Everyone I know who has lost a lot of weight on other diets (Weight Watchers, bypass, etc.) has looked drawn and unhealthy. Those I know who have lost weight via help from HCG look healthy and vibrant. It DOES make a difference when you are middle-aged and losing weight, like I am.
I am not a medical person. I am not a sales rep for HCG. And I'm not even positive that I am going to do it again...but I would like to. It worked for me and I felt good while doing it. It gave me a tremendous boost and retrained my palate and my way of looking at food. But I certainly don't want to harm my health. My doctor said my issues were the result of my body adjusting to eating so little and then NOT adjusting to eating more normally. She did not tell me not to do it again, but said that if I did, I would have to return to "normal" eating much more carefully than I did the first time.
I do know this: I believe that my body was not just surviving on 500 calories a day...but rather pulling from my stock piles of fat to be actually using more like 1500 to 2500 per day. It had to be. I had no decrease in energy at all. No weakness. No dizziness. No exhaustion. And I also know that my old lifestyle definitely did a number on my hormones (stress, cortisol, insulin and subsequent fat storage, etc.)...and I do believe that HCG helped to start righting my hormones.
There is sugar in nearly every processed food in America. For ME, I needed the intervention from something like HCG to break the sugar cycle. From what I've heard from others I know personally, HCG can be a very helpful tool to jumpstart a healthier lifestyle and relationship with food. I don't know any of my acquaintances who had the same problem as did I. Is it right for everyone? No. I'm not even sure if it is right for me to do again. But I don't think it's the diet of death.

That's so great how a brand new member can find an old thread from 4 months ago to promote a diet that is generally frowned upon and rebuked by most FS members..
It's just... so.... convenient... I wonder if this member will stay and have any more activity on FS besides this 1 thread - my guess is no, just like the rest of the day-old members that posted here..

HCG sounds like total suffering. I love food. Why not just eat clean if one needs to go that hardcore? Eat fresh, use your muscles, get trim. It's not just a process, it's a lifestyle.
Stay the course, stay on point, stay motivated, dedicated, and you won't be stopped. Discipline. Perseverance. Focus. Dig deep and you will be victorious.

I didn't read this thread thoroughly, but I hope that someone mentioned HCG's supressive effect on the male HPTA axis and the risk associated with a testosterone shutdown. If you are going to use HCG, I'd say just man up and go for some good old testosterone injections instead. You really might as well.

I have them too, and for me it is because of food intolerance. I can accidentally eat small amount of food I do not tolerate, and they will remain swollen for a few weeks.

Thanks smcred and messamermom! This site has been helpful in tracking carbs for specific foods. For example I had a hemp protein powder I put in an different container and had lost track of the carbs. ...
