I cannot stop snacking after diner even when I am not hungry and drinking water does not do the trick

Can you just plan to have a snack at that time? If you decide ahead of time what you are going to have, make sure it fits in your total calories for the day. Allow yourself that and be done with it.
The problem with late night snacking is only in what you choose for your snack. Most people would choose a high calorie, low nutrient food.
I always have a snack/dessert around 7-7:30pm. It usually is a cup of almond milk mixed w/ sugar free pudding mix and ice - so it becomes like a milkshake. If I have an extra 100 calories, then I will add a fiber one brownie. So it becomes a halfway healthy snack. (This is typically my only splurge/indulgence of the day)

Try brushing your teeth, when I want to make sure I don't eat anything else I brush my teeth because I won't want to brush them again if I eat something. If I still want something after that, I have some sugarless gum which gives me the sensation of chewing.

Snacking at night has always been a problem for me. I have tried planning a snack at night but find that if I give myself an inch I take a mile...now I only allow myself a little sweet after dinner and that's it...if I feel the cravings for a snack coming I simply go to bed. It's not always easy. I have been pretty successful for the last week or so and now if I eat at night, even a healthy snack, I feel like crap in the morning (bloated), but I find tea or if I skipped my after dinner sweet, a cup of cocoa right before bed is very soothing. Just keep trying different things and you will find what works for you. I also do not sit in front of the tv at night...I keep busy right up to about 30 minutes to an hour before bed then tea then sleep. Good luck.

a great late night snack is a wholegrain rice cracker with natural crunchy peanut butter (no added sugar) with some hot drink like tea it is very filling, tastes good and it is just 120 kcal

Plan the snack into your daily calories and stop feeling bad about it. I graze all day long, so there is no way I could do the 3 square meals type of day.
I sometimes eat right before I go to bed...an apple, or a cereal bar, or just whatever. As LONG, as it fits my daily calories.

A late night snack for me is some turkey pepperoni... 70 calories a serving and it's a nice handful. I plan a late snack into my formula.

Cut back slowly and you will find you don't need it. Going cold turkey and thinking about it may be the problem. I have cut sugar back a lot over the past year, but I did it one thing at a time. Another good idea is to just get the bad stuff out of the house. I go through every month or so and get rid of the crap. If it is not there, you won't want it.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with snacking after dinner, as long as you stay under your daily caloric limit. In fact, it's good for your metabolism to snack all day! I wish I could post a link here, but search Google for "Frequent snacking linked to healthier diet". Even the naysayers say there is "only a slight benefit", but it definitely doesn't hurt.
There are lots of new studies out there that suggest eating later at night isn't going to cause you to burn fewer calories. It's all about what you eat, and how much in a full 24 hour period. Eating just before bed probably isn't a good idea though due to problems it can cause with sleep, and your stomach.
I did an experiment recently to test the idea of calories in, calories out. I found what my caloric needs were to maintain my current weight, and subtracted 1000 calories from that which gave me a deficit of 7000 calories a week (an equivalent of 2 pounds). For three weeks I did absolutely no exercise other than my daily activities. I ate what I wanted when I wanted as long as I didn't go over X amount of calories in 24 hours.
The verdict. I lost 2 pounds each and every week. In fact the third week I lost 3. Not snacking late in the evening, or after dinner to lose weight while not necessarily a myth, does not benefit you unless you've already reached your caloric limit for the day by diner time.

I agree 100% with Daymon74. I eat what I want but make sure I don't go over my daily calorie limit of 1200. I do go over it sometimes more than others but when I stay at 1200 calories for a women I loose weight. When I go over it some by not every day, I maintain my weight. If I go over it several days in a row, I gain weight.

If anything, there's a little evidence suggesting that pushing your carbs later in the day might be superior for weight loss:
Greater weight loss and hormonal changes after 6 months diet with carbohydrates eaten mostly at dinner.
But this is probably just an outlier. And even if it isn't, the effect is still minor - food timing is mostly irrelevant for weight loss. It may be affect satiety, mood, and performance, but those are issues of individual preference.
Eat when you like, just stay in a deficit.
