So while I was in the grocery store the other day I spotted a whole artichoke and decided since I've never had a fresh one before I would try it. So now that I have it, would someone tell me what I should do with it? How do I cook it? Do I cook it?

Slice the stem off close to the bottom. You can cut the tips off of the leaves if you'd like, but I never bother.

I steam mine on the stove for 30-45 minutes.

You can do a web search for "how to steam an artichoke" and "how to eat an artichoke" if you'd like better info.

not sure how strict your diet is but i always make lemon butter for mine. it is just 50/50 of fresh lemon juice and butter (for one artachoke i would do 1/2 a cup each) after u steam it pull the leaves off and dip it in, the way you eat it is strip the "meat" off the inside of the leaves with your bottom teeth. when i steam it i just wait til i can easly pull a bottom leaf off with your fingers.
They have alterenitives for butter that will be a little healthier of coarse...enjoy!

Lemon/mayo (I know, I KNOW) is a great combo too. Sticks a little better to the leaf. And it's flipping delicious.

Dang, now I REALLY want an artichoke for dinner.

you can grill artichokes too and dip the leaves in balsamic and olive oil-or Italian dressing-yum!
